Secondary Education (History)
This course consists of school experience, which is in 2 different schools; trainee involvement in teaching builds up gradually, from observation and supported teaching initially, to solo teaching for 1/2 a timetable, or more, by the end of the year; trainees have mentors within the school, who can instruct in educational and professional matters generally; students also have 1 tutor within the Department who acts as pastoral tutor to each school to advise on non-subject-specific difficulties; successful completion of this course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), subject to satisfactory performance in skills tests.
A single or joint Honours degree of grade 2.2 or above, at least 50 per cent of which is in a subject which is directly relevant to the teaching subject; grade B or above in GCSE English language and mathematics or equivalent; experience of working, in either a paid or voluntary capacity, with children or young people; interview.
Educational and professional studies course; 1 option from: English at KS3, Welsh at KS3, history at KS3, geography at KS3, drama, special educational needs, and games teaching.
Assessment methods include: Continuous assessment by school mentors and tutors, and fulfilment of the attendance requirements of the course; written assignments; classroom assessments; self assessments.
Students may be eligible for a teaching grant of �4,000; these grants are available to all eligible European Union residents.
