Modern European History (Political Culture)

This course takes in a huge swath of one of the most fascinating periods of European history: the tumultuous changes that occured from the 1830s to the close of the 20th century. It offers students the opportunity to explore the conflicts, changes and developments which shaped the continent of Europe. Students study a choice of fascinating modules which look at the forging of European class, cultural and political identities; the ideologies and mentalities characteristic of an era of mass politics; and the roles of class and elites within society. Subjects to be addressed include the roles of demagogues or media manipulation; the relationship between active citizenship and state power; and the role of experience, tradition and memory in modern European societies.

Entry requirements

Honours degree (minimum 2.2 with minimum final average of 56.5 per cent) or equivalent; IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 93 (internet based) where applicable.

Course modules

Core modules: skills and sources of the historian; political culture in modern Britain and Europe; dissertation. Optional modules: political power and the media in Britain; politics and war, the political culture of Britain 1939-45; the European bourgeoisie, milieux, mentalities, politics 1848-1950; the working class and labour movements in Europe; landownership and power in modern Europe; class and community in Wales 1850-1939; political culture and the popular press in Wales; continuity and change, British political history 1832-1997.

Assessment methods

The course is assessed through a diverse range of assignments, including the 15,000-word dissertation.
