History and Heritage

This course addresses the concept of heritage from a range of perspectives to equip students for work in a diverse array of relevant occupations such as in museums, for heritage organisations, tourism, cultural services, national parks or the media. This highly vocational course provides students with the necessary skills to excel in this discipline. Where possible, students also are given the opportunity to gain authentic heritage work experience through placements with bodies like the National Library of Wales and the National Trust.

Entry requirements

Good undergraduate degree 2.2 (UK) or above, equating to a mark of 56.5 per cent or above in a closely related discipline. The University considers applicants with other relevant experience which gives a similar basis for entry.

Course modules

Modules include: sources for postgraduate research in the modern humanities and social sciences archive management: principles and techniques; information and society; rare books and special collections; local studies and community heritage. Optional modules: concepts and sources in heritage studies; heritage organisations and the presentation of the past; the 2nd World War in history and popular memory; the allure and the uses of the past: historical culture in modern Europe; the professionalisation of history.

Assessment methods

The course is assessed through a diverse range of assignments, including the 15,000-word dissertation.
