Modern British History (Political Culture)

This course takes in a huge swath of Britain's most fascinating periods of history: the tumultuous changes that occurred from the 1830s to the close of the 20th century. It offers students the opportunity to explore the conflicts, changes and developments which shaped the United Kingdom. Students study a choice of modules which look at the forging of political indentities, the relationship between active citizenship and state power, the role of classes and elites and of health, wealth and poverty. Students examine periods of great social change including the development of British politics over the course of the 2nd World War, and the challenge to British national identities in the post-Imperial age.

Entry requirements

Bachelor's Honours degree (2.2 with final average of at least 56.5 per cent) or equivalent in a related subject, and accompanying references. The University considers applicants with other experience which gives a similar basis for entry. IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 93 (internet based) where applicable.

Course modules

Modules include: information and society; sources for postgraduate research in the modern humanities and social sciences; archive management: principles and techniques; information and society; rare books and special collections; local studies and community heritage; political culture in modern Britain, Europe and the USA; power, culture and identity in international history; the European powers in the age of world wars; the 2nd world war in history and popular memory; Britain and the USA: cultural and political connections and disconnections 1945-1970; the allure and the uses of the past: historical culture in modern Europe; science, place and Victorian culture; Britain and Zion; the Arab-Israeli conflict in British politics; British counterinsurgency warfare in the 20th century; class and community in wales 1850 - 1939; health, medicine and society in wales, 1830-1951.

Assessment methods

The course is assessed through a diverse range of assignments, including the 15,000-word MA dissertation.
