This is a research based course, research, in this context, implying everything that is required to bring to completion a novel or substantial collection of poems, as well as to provide a critical and analytical account of the work produced. Students are expected, under the guidance of a supervisor, to demonstrate skills in handling a sustained creative project, while at the same time establishing a critical framework for writing. Research is closely supervised throughout by 1 or more core members of the department.
Application form with letter explaining reasons for enrolling on the course; this should include an outline of proposed creative work and touch on relevant literary influences; plus a submission of creative work, written during the past 3 years, eg: 5 or 6 poems of not more than 40 lines each; 2 prose pieces of 1,500 to 2,000 words each; 1 prose passage of 3,000 to 4,000 words in total; IELTS 7.5 (for non-UK students only). You must be a graduate.
