By studying the central canon of Irish texts, students develop a sound knowledge of the language across a broad period. Students may also get to grips with relevant languages, including a comparative study of Scots and Irish Gaelic. Students are also be able to converse in these languages. Alongside this process, students examine the subject from a range of historical and contemporary perspectives to sharpen their critical faculties and prepare to make their own contribution to the subject in their dissertation project. Students do this by developing complex concepts within the field of study and apply to them the same critical and analytical rigour. In developing, testing and coherently presenting their own argument, students become a formidable academic of Irish literature.

Entry requirements

A 2.2 Honours degree equating to a mark of 56.5 per cent or above. Graduates in Welsh or Celtic studies would constitute a good background for the course. Those who are not graduates must satisfy the University that they are of the required academic standard to pursue postgraduate study.

Assessment methods

The taught part of the course is delivered and assessed through lectures, tutorials and essay projects. Successful completion of the portfolio leads to the award of the Master's.
