Intelligent Systems

The programme covers the following topics: adaptive behaviour, which covers artificial life, adaptation in nature, and application to intelligent systems; representation and reasoning, which looks at how systems cope with uncertainty and how they use different modes of reasoning to cope with their environment; machine learning, which looks at how systems learn from experience and improve performance; applied intelligent systems, in which students apply techniques learned during the course to construct real-world intelligent systems.

Entry requirements

A 2.2 Honours degree in computer science, software engineering or a related subject, this should include programming in a language like Java, C or C++; professional experience may be considered with some preliminary study; English language requirement: IELTS minimum proficiency level is 6.0; TOEFL, the minimum score is 88 for the internet based test.

Course modules

Semester 1: introduction to intelligent systems; representation and reasoning for intelligent systems; research skills and personal development. Semester 2: adaptive behaviour from natural systems; machine learning for intelligent autonomous systems; applied intelligent systems.

Assessment methods

These include: practical exercises; case studies; course work and formal examinations. The taught part of the course (part 1) is delivered and assessed through lectures, student seminars, practical exercises, case studies, course work and formal examinations. The subsequent successful submission of the research dissertation (part 2) leads to the award of an MSc.
