English Literature

This course aims to extend students� knowledge of English literature, focusing on the Renaissance, the 'long' 19th century, and the 20th/21st century. On each of these period-based modules, students will explore canonical and non-canonical texts and investigate their social and cultural contexts. On our research methods module, students will examine topical literary issues, such as the role of archives and digital editions, and develop essential research skills, like how to formulate research questions and methodologies. Optional modules allow students to tailor the course to their best interests; they will study at an advanced level in a lively and intellectual department with a long tradition of teaching excellence and an international reputation for research.

Entry requirements

Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline and/or relevant professional experience; candidates for whom English is not the 1st language are expected to demonstrate a certified level of proficiency of at least IELTS 7.0 (or equivalent); non-academic conditions: writing portfolio. Portfolio requirements (International students only): either a 2,000 word essay titled 'How has the study of English literature changed over the last century?', fully referenced and with a bibliography, or a 1,000-word proposal for the MA dissertation plus a bibliography. Students must also include a piece of marked work from their degree studies.

Course modules

Core modules: Renaissance drama and cultures of performance; re-reading modernism, practising postmodernism; the long 19th century: controversies and cities; research methods; major project. Optional modules: workshop: the novel; special topic (in creative writing); workshop: the short story; patterns of story (creative writing); creativity and content in publishing.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on essays; critical reviews; presentations; 15000-word dissertation.
