Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery

Our course provides students with the breadth and depth of experience to fully engage with all aspects of minimally invasive and robotic surgery including the latest technological advances. Students undertake laparoscopic simulation training, based at the ICENI Centre in Colchester, and also have access to the Broomfield Robotic Centre at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford. The ICENI Centre is internationally recognised as a leading centre of excellence in the field of minimally invasive surgery. It combines the advanced multidisciplinary laparoscopic techniques practised at Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust. We offer a laboratory and training facilities and lecture theatres linked with partner hospital sites.

Entry requirements

A recognised primary medical degree that has been approved by the General Medical Council which has been awarded by an institution listed on the Avicenna Directory for Medicine. To be included on the Avicenna directory an institution must have a physical address in the country awarding the qualification. If English is not the 1st language, applicants are expected to demonstrate a certificated level of proficiency of at least IELTS 6.5 (academic level) or equivalent English language qualification, as recognised by Anglia Ruskin University.

Course modules

Core modules: Core principles of minimally invasive and robotic surgery; research studies; major project. Specialist modules: Principles of minimally invasive and robotic surgery (gynaecology); principles of minimally invasive and robotic surgery (gastrointestinal); principles of minimally invasive and robotic surgery (vascular); principles of minimally invasive and robotic surgery (urology). Optional modules: Global leadership; advancing professional decision making.

Assessment methods

Students are assessed using a wide range of strategies throughout the course, including objective structured clinical examinations, simulation practice training sessions and written assignments.
