Biotechnology

The core framework for this course is built around modules which develop specific knowledge and skills within the broad subject of DNA-based techniques; there is a strong emphasis towards developing a wide range of current laboratory skills through a variety of practical assessments, research projects and field trips; students are also exposed to current and future applications of medical biotechnology while student-led class debates form an engaging part of several modules surrounding professional and ethical topics; flexibility has been built into key modules, to allow variation in topics.

Entry requirements

Applicants should possess or expect to possess when commencing the course a 1st or 2nd Class Honours degree (2.1 or 2.2), based in a science related degree or cognate subject, from a UK higher education institution, or its equivalent, or the equivalent in experiential learning (a minimum of 5 years of qualifying employment); all applicants are required to demonstrate their preparedness for the modules in (medical) biotechnology; prospective students with non-standard entry qualifications are advised to discuss their personal position with the course leader before applying; the university may require submission of appropriate documentary evidence before any particular application is considered. If English is not the 1st language students are expected to demonstrate a certificated level of proficiency of at least IELTS 6.5 (academic level) or equivalent English language qualification, as recognised by Anglia Ruskin University.

Course modules

Core modules: Medical biotechnology; molecular genetics and bioinformatics; techniques in DNA analysis; professional and ethical practice in industry; research methods and preparation; major project.

Assessment methods

Essays, practical reports, presentations, scientific paper reviews and written research reports, major project.
