Research Methods in Psychology

Our course provides students with a training route to pursue a research career in psychology; it covers generic transferable skills in addition to quantitative and qualitative research methods training; our course provides students with a balance of these research methods and equips learners with highly employable skills ready for the competitive market of PhD studentships, research assistantships or other academic posts; our course is also designed to fit The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) remit for postgraduate study.

Entry requirements

Applicants require a 2.2 in psychology with Graduate Basis for Recognition (GBR) for the British Psychology Society (BPS); or 2.1 or above in non-accredited psychology (or closely related discipline, such as health psychology, joint Honours psychology, or neuropsychology). If Englsih is not the 1st language: applicants require IELTS: 6.5 (academic level) or equivalent English langauge qualification.

Course modules

Modules include: Issues in psychological research; quantitative research methods; qualitative research methods; dissertation. Optional modules: Current issues in cognitive neuroscience; developmental psychopathology.

Assessment methods

A broad range of assessment methods are used to measure every aspect of understanding and skilled application of the relevant techniques; these include essays, portfolios, exams, presentations, poster presentations, debates, data analyses and a final dissertation module worth 1/3 of the total course assessment.
