Telecommunications Systems

This programme is designed to develop or update a wide range of technical understanding, engineering knowledge and professional skills that are needed to contribute effectively to the design and development of telecommunications systems for national and international networks, or to enter telecommunications research.

Entry requirements

A good 1st or 2nd Class Honours degree in a relevant engineering field; science or closely related discipline; qualifications from outside the UK or a combination of qualifications and or experience are also considered; overseas applicants also need to demonstrate English language ability: a TOEFL score of at least 100 (internet-based) with a minimum score of 23 in speaking, 22 in reading and 21 in writing and listening; an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in each band; Pearson Academic score of 61 overall with a minimum score of 59 in each area.

Course modules

Modules include: information theory and coding and traffic theory; radio systems and personal communications networks; internet-working; mobile data networks; realtime communication networks; digital transmission; optical communications; software engineering; introductory programming; MSc project; project preperation.

Assessment methods

Taught modules are assessed by formal examination and by course work performed in laboratories and case studies; the project is assessed through a dissertation, an oral presentation of the results (viva), and an assessment by the project supervisor.
