Product Design Innovation

The course covers the principles underlying professional product design; enables students to develop appropriate innovation and entrepreneurial skills enabling viable manufacturing, marketing or business realities.

Entry requirements

A 1st or 2nd Class UK Honours degree in a product design; engineering; or business related course; 2 years experience in relevant design work is an advantage; international students whose native language is not English also need to demonstrate English language ability: a TOEFL score of at least 100 (internet-based) with a minimum score of 23 in speaking, 22 in reading and 21 in writing and listening; an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in each band; Pearson Academic score of 61 overall with a minimum score of 59 in each area.

Course modules

Core modules: new product development; research project; product design innovation; sustainable design; innovation business development; design realisation; international studies; major project.
Optional modules: strategic management; computational fluid dynamics and applications; finite element analysis: theory and application; renewable energy; CAD principles and materials selection; advanced computer aided design.

Assessment methods

Modules are assessed mainly through coursework, although some modules may also have exams. The major project is assessed by dissertation and supporting design work.
