Translation in a European Context
This programme provides an academic qualification for those intending to become (or who already are) professional translators. It is 1 of the programmes in the European Union which has been chosen to be part of the exclusive European Masters in Translation (EMT) Network. Students also have the opportunity to work towards Chartered Institute of Linguists� certification. This programme links the development of expertise in advanced translation skills (especially in political and journalistic texts) with theoretical and professional aspects of translation. The programme also encourages the development of an understanding of European integration. The highest achieving student on this programme will be awarded the Translation People Company Prize for Excellence in Translation.
An upper 2nd Class Honours degree in translation studies, or in French and/ or German and/or Spanish, or an equivalent qualification. Applicants may be asked to do a written test or an interview. Applicants whose 1st language is not English must also have an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with a minimum score of 6 in each component or an equivalent qualification.
Modules include: The European Union: a web of institutions; theoretical concepts of translation studies; text analysis for translation; the translation profession; research methods; dissertation. Elective modules: specialised translation project; practical translation: French to English, German to English, English to French, English to German, English to Spanish, Spanish to English.
Assessment is on a credit accumulation basis and by written examination (practical translation modules), oral examination (text analysis module) or extended essay (remaining modules); successful completion of the taught modules is a precondition for proceeding to a 15000 word dissertation.
