Translation Studies

This programme provides knowledge and understanding of the discipline of translation studies. Students acquire knowledge about the social role and function of translation for intercultural communication, cultural representation and perception. Students also gain knowledge of theoretical frameworks that underpin the process of translation and related forms of intercultural communication and cultural exchange.

Entry requirements

An upper 2nd Class Honours Degree in translation studies, or in English and/or another foreign language, or equivalent qualification; students may be asked to do a written test or come for an interview; those whose 1st language is not English must also have an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with a minimum score of 6 in each component or an equivalent qualification; students should demonstrate high-level performance in at least 2 languages (English should be 1 of them); it is expected that dual language competence has been acquired separately before entering the programme.

Course modules

Modules include: theoretical concepts of translation studies; text analysis for translation; research methods; translation and the representation of cultures; specialised (LSP); translation project; analysing written and spoken discourse; the translation profession (workshop); dissertation.

Assessment methods

Assessment is on a credit accumulation basis and by written or oral examination or extended essay; the final award is given on satisfactory completion of a 15000-word dissertation.
