Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and Translation Studies

This programme provides an up-to-date framework, based on linguistic, social and intercultural awareness, for developing expertise and theoretical knowledge in the areas of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) and translation studies. It will appeal to those who wish to embark on a career in TESOL and who also wish to acquire additional expertise in translation theory and practice. Students also have the opportunity to work towards Chartered Institute of Linguists Certification.

Entry requirements

Normally a good UK Honours degree (minimum of an upper 2nd Class) in English language, linguistics or a related discipline or an overseas degree recognised by Aston University. Applicants whose 1st language is not English must also have an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with a minimum score of 6 in each component or an equivalent qualification.

Course modules

Core modules: theoretical concepts of translation studies; text analysis for translation; the translation profession; research methods; English teaching practice; approaches to teaching and learning; dissertation. Optional modules (choose 1 from): corpus linguistics; approaches to course and materials design; specialised (LSP) translation project; practical translation: French�English; practical translation: German�English; practical translation: English�French; practical translation: English�German; practical translation: English�Spanish; practical translation: Spanish�English.

Assessment methods

Assessment is on a credit accumulation basis and by written examination or extended essay, except for teaching in practice where teaching performance is also assessed; successful completion of the taught modules is a precondition for proceeding to a 15,000 word dissertation and award of the MA.
