Policy and Social Research

This programme equips students with the tools and knowledge to understand how and why public policy problems occur, and how these are affected by the social, cultural and political context, both in the UK and internationally. It offers students a sound training in research methods and equips them with cutting-edge theoretical and methodological approaches. The programme is flexible and responds to the interests of our students.

Entry requirements

Normally, at least an upper 2nd Class degree taken in an appropriate subject (including business studies) at a British or Irish university, or an overseas degree recognised by Aston University; applicants whose 1st language is not English must also have an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with a minimum score of 6 in each component or an equivalent qualification.

Course modules

Core modules: public policy, public management and governance; research methods; social theory and social change; dissertation.
Optional modules: healthcare organisation and policies; social policy: contemporary themes and challenges work placement; being human: disability and the social world; globalisation and social change; social divisions.

Assessment methods

Assessment occurs through essays, examinations and a dissertation.
