Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
This programme is designed for those who would like to obtain a substantial postgraduate qualification in the field of TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages).
Students should normally have, or expect to obtain, an upper 2nd Class Honours degree in an appropriate subject, or equivalent qualification; applicants whose 1st language is not English must also have an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with a minimum score of 6 in each component or an equivalent qualification.
Core modules: approaches to teaching and learning; English teaching practice; English teaching practice ii; approaches to course and materials design; research methods; dissertation. Optional modules (choose 2 from): lexicogrammar; analysing written and spoken discourse; language contact and globalisation; analysing written and spoken discourse 2.
All assessment is by written assignment except for the English teaching practice module, which is assessed via microteaching and a research project presentation. For written coursework, students choose their own assignment titles under the guidance of module tutors.
