Molecular Biotechnology

This programme provides a high level of scientific knowledge and understanding of these processes with the option to focus on specific areas of interest through module choice.

Entry requirements

This programme is open to suitably qualified UK and International graduates; applicants must hold at least a 2nd Class Honours degree in biochemistry, biotechnology, biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, genetics, materials science, medicine, microbiology, or a related field, from a recognised university or an overseas degree recognised by Aston University; international students whose native language is not English also need to demonstrate English language ability: a TOEFL score of at least 93 with a minimum score of 19 in speaking, 19 in reading, 23 in writing and 19 in listening; or an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in each band; Pearson Academic score of 63 overall with a minimum score of 57 in each area.

Course modules

Core modules: advanced laboratory skills with data analysis and interpretation; understanding professional practice and enhancing employability; mammalian cell biology and culture; enzyme technology; protein engineering and production. Optional modules include: industrial fermentation and bioreactors; immunology; toxicology; ageing and regenerative medicine; transplantation biology; oxidative stress and inflammatory disease; neurodegenerative disorders; obesity and metabolic disorders.

Assessment methods

The programme is delivered using a combination of lectures, practical classes, tutorials and seminars. Some modules include group work. The core employability module uses visiting lecturers from industry to illustrate the potential employment avenues for graduates of this course. The course includes a research project, this is likely to be a laboratory-based project where students collect and analyse their own data. Assessment methods employed include examinations and continuous assessment through coursework; these differ for individual modules.
