Secondary Education (Mathematics, Welsh medium)
This course is workshop based so that students have the opportunity to participate actively in each and every session. A variety of teaching approaches are considered for use in the classroom including problem solving, investigational work and the use of information technology. Initially, students concentrate on how to plan lessons and how to incorporate variety in to their teaching. A key aspect of the course is the opportunity to develop teaching so as to cater for the different learning styles of pupils.
Relevant Honours degree or equivalent, A-level or equivalent in the 2nd subject to be taught if relevant, and GCSE grade C English language and mathematics or equivalent. Applicants must meet the National Assembly of Wales� requirements for health and physical capacity to teach. Recent experience of working with children or young people is considered valuable.
A system of continuous assessment is employed. Students must satisfy their assessors in practical teaching. There are coursework assignments that have to be completed but there are no written examinations.
The National Assembly for Wales offers a bursary to students training to teach through the medium of Welsh; all PGCE Secondary trainee teachers are entitled to a training grant which is paid monthly from October to June during the training year; the grant for trainee teachers on postgraduate mathematics is �9,000; in addition, those who qualify in, and go on to teach, mathematics and science, will also be entitled to a �5,000 teaching grant.
