Secondary Education (Physical Education)

The aim of the course is to prepare students for teaching in a variety of present-day school situations. Emphasis is placed on developing teaching competences in the full range of National Curriculum requirements for Physical Education and Health Education.

Entry requirements

Relevant Honours degree or equivalent, A-level or equivalent in the 2nd subject to be taught if relevant, and GCSE grade C English language and mathematics or equivalent. Applicants must meet the National Assembly of Wales requirements for health and physical capacity to teach. Recent experience of working with children or young people is considered valuable. All applicants must have at least 3 coaching qualifications in the specific areas of activity in National Curriculum physical education, i.e., hockey, netball, rugby, soccer, gymnastics, dance, swimming, tennis, athletics, outdoor and adventurous activities, basketball, and cricket.

Course modules

The main elements of the Physical Education course are based on: games; athletics; dance; swimming; gymnastics; outdoor activities; in health education the elements are substance use and misuse; sex education; family-life education; health-related exercise; food and nutrition; personal hygiene; the environmental and psychological aspects of health education; the Physical Education course also includes extra-curricular activities, safe practice, and first aid.

Assessment methods

A system of continuous assessment is employed. Students must satisfy their assessors in practical teaching. There are coursework assignments that have to be completed but there are no written examinations.

Sponsorship information

All PGCE Secondary trainee teachers are entitled to a training grant which is paid monthly from October to June during the training year; the grant for trainee teachers on physical education initial teacher training courses is �4,000.
