Secondary Education (Religious Education, Welsh medium)
The course involves trainees discovering and understanding what good RE is all about as well as encouraging them towards striving for excellence in their teaching of RE. The main emphasis is on promoting an understanding of the key issues within the process of teaching and learning in RE and to develop trainees skills in applying these issues to classroom teaching. This is done through tutor led sessions, presentations by trainees, workshops, group sessions, discussions ,written tasks and assignments, visits to places of worship locally and further afield, and a 'pilgrimage' to Enlli, the Island of Saints.
Relevant Honours degree or equivalent, A-level or equivalent in the 2nd subject to be taught if relevant, and GCSE grade C English language and mathematics or equivalent. Applicants must meet the National Assembly of Wales requirements for health and physical capacity to teach. Recent experience of working with children or young people is considered valuable.
Modules include: discovering effective RE; the context of RE; lesson planning; differentiation; promoting literacy through RE; pupils' attainment and assessment; teaching resources; thinking skills; RE in KS4; post 16 RE; multisensory RE; using places of worship.
A system of continuous assessment is employed. Students must satisfy their assessors in practical teaching. There are coursework assignments that have to be completed but there are no written examinations.
The National Assembly for Wales offers a bursary to students training to teach through the medium of Welsh; all PGCE Secondary trainee teachers are entitled to a training grant which is paid monthly from October to June during the training year; the grant for trainee teachers on postgraduate Religious Education is £6,000.
