Secondary Education (Welsh)

The course deals with 2 specific areas: The teaching of Welsh as a 1st language and the teaching of Welsh as a 2nd language, according to the requirements of the National Curriculum and the specifications of external examinations (GCSE and Advanced Level).

Entry requirements

Relevant Honours degree or equivalent, A-level or equivalent in the 2nd subject to be taught if relevant, and GCSE grade C English language and mathematics or equivalent. Applicants must meet the National Assembly of Wales requirements for health and physical capacity to teach. Recent experience of working with children or young people is considered valuable.

Course modules

Modules explores: the aims and objectives of teaching and learning Welsh and Welsh 2nd language; Welsh and Welsh 2nd language in the national curriculum, GCSE and advanced level courses, and their role within the whole curriculum in secondary and tertiary education; preparing schemes of work and lesson plans; strategies to develop pupils' oral, reading, and writing skills; the role of information and communication technology in the welsh/welsh second language classroom; resources for the teaching and learning of Welsh and Welsh 2nd language (teaching schemes), textbooks, soundtapes/videos, television programmes, dvds, cd-roms, computer software etc.; planning for classroom management and organisation; assessing pupils' progress and attainment; promoting aspects of Welsh culture.

Assessment methods

A system of continuous assessment is employed. Students must satisfy their assessors in practical teaching. There are coursework assignments that have to be completed but there are no written examinations.

Sponsorship information

All PGCE Secondary trainee teachers are entitled to a training grant which is paid monthly from October to June during the training year; the grant for trainee teachers on postgraduate Welsh is �9,000; in addition, those who qualify in, and go on to teach Welsh will also be entitled to a £2,500 teaching grant.
