Secondary Education (Art, Welsh medium)
This course aims to develop students expertise in becoming confident and effective classroom teachers of art. This is achieved by ensuring that students develop and extend their own experience and understanding of art and by relating that experience and understanding to the needs of the classroom situation.
Relevant Honours degree or equivalent, A-level or equivalent in the 2nd subject to be taught if relevant, and GCSE grade C English language and mathematics or equivalent; applicants must meet the National Assembly of Wales' requirements for health and physical capacity to teach; recent experience of working with children or young people is considered valuable.
Emphasis is placed on curriculum development in relation to the requirements of the National Curriculum, the school syllabus, and examinations. Other aspects will include technical methods, organisation and discipline, the management of resources including health and safety requirements, display, assessment, and recording and reporting. Methods of study include lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, and individual study.
Coursework links directly with school-based activity, and the study of educational theory is related to practice in all aspects of the course. Students will be given the opportunity to enhance their understanding of the role of art in contemporary culture, while reflecting on educational issues and contexts will help to explore the value of art education in the classroom.
The National Assembly for Wales offers a bursary to students training to teach through the medium of Welsh; all PGCE Secondary trainee teachers are entitled to a training grant which is paid monthly from October to June during the training year; the grant for trainee teachers on postgraduate art initial teacher training courses is £4,000.
