School of Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences

The institution

The School of Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences (SHES), has been providing high-calibre taught postgraduate (PGT) degrees since 2000. Over this period Bangor has attracted some of the world's best teaching and research staff who have contributed to the development of a range of taught Masters degree MSc programmes and innovative MRes degrees with an emphasis on research skills.

We are regularly rated in the Top 10 for both Student Satisfaction and Research Quality:

  • Top 10 in the UK (Guardian University Guide 2016);
  • 1st in Wales/7th in the UK for Research in Sport Science with 100% of research either world leading or at an international level (Research Excellence Framework, 2014).

Postgraduate study

The School of Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences has over 15 years of experience delivering flexible Masters programmes. Whether registered for a taught MSc, research intensive MRes, or for a higher degree by research only (MPhil or PhD), we aim to develop your potential as an independent researcher who can operate from a theory-driven perspective and can address both theoretical and applied questions using a wide variety of research methods.  The programmes include the application of knowledge, through the 'Supervised Experience’ module and a case-study approach to a number of assessments.  The Supervised Experience module prepares students for the first year of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) Supervisory Experience.

Research project work provides an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience and can lead to work being published.  As a result of this approach, the research skills of our postgraduate students are widely recognised as exemplary and they are in great demand once they qualify. PhD students from the School have gone on to work at other universities; with elite sport teams and governing bodies across the UK and world (eg University of Melbourne, British Olympic Association, UK Sport, Cleveland Browns Football team).

British Psychological Society accredited.

We are proud to have been the first UK Sport Science School to gain this accreditation for our MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology programme.

The scientific integrity of our academics (all of whom are research active) is regularly recognised by research accreditation exercises such as the Research Excellence Framework (REF). The results of the last REF (2014) confirmed our well-established reputation for the highest quality research, with 100% of our work being judged as either world leading or at an international level.  This placed us as one of the top ten Sport Science Schools in the UK. The School has a track record of supporting research into clinical exercise rehabilitation and disease prevention, elite performance including talent identification and development.

The School's extensive teaching and research facilities are housed in a listed building overlooking the Menai Straits. We have approximately 20 laboratories within the School, some of which are smaller, specialist or single equipment labs (eg psychomotor suite including Optotrak equipment, driving simulator, psychophysiology, water immersion laboratories etc).   In terms of learning and the data collection opportunities, we believe this variety of labs allows students to get the most out of their degree and enhances their student experience.

Our specialist laboratories house state-of-the-art equipment for sport and exercise physiology, motor control and learning, psychology, motion analysis and psychophysiology.  Facilities include: exercise physiology, testing and rehabilitation laboratories; altitude/hypoxia and environmental chambers; a water immersion laboratory; cardiovascular testing laboratory; 3D high speed motion capture systems for movement analysis; a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry laboratory; cell biology and biochemistry laboratories; plus some of the best views in the country!
