This programme has been designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop a critical understanding of the principles and application of research design and analytical methods relevant to the scientific study of sport and exercise sciences; this programme gives students the option to study elements of both physiology and psychology; the programme facilitates the integration of theory and professional practice, and throughout the programme the research process and emphasis on student autonomy of learning become increasingly important; students may have the opportunity to prepare for the British association of sport and exercise sciences (BASES) supervisory experience training, which is normally a pre-requisite of the association's professional accreditation.

Entry requirements

Master of Research - MRes: At least a 2.2 Honours degree is required. EU and Overseas students, whose 1st language is not English, are required to take the standardised English Language test (IELTS) at their British Council before the June of their admission to the course. IELTS 6.0 (with no element below 5.5) is required.

Course modules

The taught element of the programme includes a 20 credit compulsory research skills module which students combine with 40 credits from the following optional modules: how to conduct statistics; presentations in statistics; peer reviewing of scientific research; exercise is medicine; performance psychology; exercise psychology; performance physiology; sports injury rehabilitation; psychology of injury and rehabilitation; effective coach practice; psychology of effective coaching.

Assessment methods

Students will undertake a research project: under the guidance of their supervising tutor(s), they will pro-actively determine the content of this unit.

All applicants to the Master's programmes are eligible to apply for bursaries and assistantships from the school, plus funding may also be available from the university.
