Secondary Education (Science, Chemistry, 11-16)

This programme prepares students to become confident and effective teachers of science in secondary schools to pupils aged 11-16, in line with National Curriculum requirements; there is also the opportunity to experience post-16 physics, chemistry or biology through University based sessions on planning, teaching and assessment at post-16; the programme has University and school based components; the University based programme concentrates on subject knowledge and the teaching of classroom skills and management; students undertake an initial audit of subject knowledge and this is used by staff in planning the sessions so that your needs are met; the sessions have a high level of practical work so that students gain the subject knowledge as well as skills in teaching the topics; school based work forms the major part of the programme and students have the opportunity to work in at least 3 schools for a sustained period of time; while in school students are under the guidance of a trained mentor who is supported by University staff.

Entry requirements

A Bachelors degree with at least 50 per cent suitable science content (biology, zoology, botany, chemistry, physics, geology or other similar area of study); environmental science is also considered; in addition candidates need an A-Level in 1 of the sciences; a minimum of 2 weeks in a mainstream secondary state school in England before applying; 5 GCSE passes at grade C or above (or recognised equivalents) including English and mathematics.

Assessment methods

A personalised process of continuous assessment ensures that learning is appropriate and effective; assessment takes account of both programme experience and the school or setting phase and includes researching developing practice through assignment tasks; we support students in developing a rigorous evidence-based account of their educational journey.
