Birkbeck, University of London
Gender, Sexuality and Culture
This programme is built around the interdisciplinary study of gender and sexuality, bridging the divide between the social sciences and the arts and humanities. The Gender, Sexuality and Culture programme is designed for those with special interests in the humanities, including literature, history, media and film, visual art, philosophy and cultural theory. It addresses the latest debates, using cutting-edge research from this exciting and growing area of study. It considers competing theories and approaches to gender and sexuality, and explores the ways in which these intersect with concepts of race, ethnicity, age and class. This course will develop your ability to discuss diverse theories of gender and sexuality and consider how gender and sexuality are represented, and operate, within relevant humanities or social sciences literatures. You will be given a firm grounding in gender theory and will develop the confidence to apply appropriate theories to your independent research project.
MA: Good 2nd Class Honours degree. Other relevant qualifications, and appropriate professional training and experience, are also welcome. If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests.
