This course is designed to develop your German language skills and/or increase your knowledge of German culture, as well as improving your research and study skills.
Normally a 1st degree in a subject other than German or modern languages, and/or a BA not equivalent to UK honours standard. Language skills in German equivalent to A-level plus 2 years (also equivalent to a pass in German 5). If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests.
You take a high-level German language module, German 5, and 2 option modules from a selection, one of which can be an extended essay on a topic chosen by you. German language module: German 5. Option modules: A topic in German thought: The idea of enlightenment; beating nature: Artificiality, imitation and simulation; das dritte reich; death: A theme in German culture; die deutschsprachige presse; film and politics; German early modern literature; German women's writing; myth, folk and fairy tales; special authors; stories of the self (level 5); the age of Geothe; the third Reich; the 20th century: Key themes in comparative European history (Level 5); wirtschaftsdeutsch.
