Cloud and Data Technologies

This specialist programme in cloud and data technologies focuses on 2 important technologies in the IT industry and their relationship to current and emerging IT industry practice. You will gain specialist knowledge and technical skills that you can use in the analysis of problems arising in the use of cloud and data technologies, in evaluation and application of their use, and in research into, and development of, new technologies.

Entry requirements

A good 1st degree or MSc in computer science, with the syllabus containing a substantial amount of programming, preferably in an object-oriented language. Joint Honours computing graduates may also be eligible, provided they have covered a substantial amount of programming, or have equivalent professional experience in the information technology industry. If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English: IELTS Academic Test score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests.

Course modules

The programme consists of 4 taught modules, taken over 1 or 2 years:

Advances in Data Management: covers the technologies underlying modern data management systems. You study advanced aspects of query processing, transaction management, distributed data management, and recent developments in web data, 'big data' and alternative database architectures.

Cloud Computing: covers the emerging area of cloud computing and how it relates to traditional models of computing. You gain competence in MapReduce as a programming model for distributed processing of 'big data'.
Data and Knowledge Management: covers the principles and application of data and knowledge management technologies and languages including SQL. You study the use of these in leading commercial database management systems as well as emerging approaches to data management.
Data Warehousing and Data Mining: covers the organisation, analysis and mining of large data sets to support business intelligence applications. You study the principles and commercial application of the technologies, as well as research results and emerging architectures underpinning the analysis and mining of 'big data'.
