Economics, Mathematics and Statistics

The Department of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics at Birkbeck is one of London’s premier providers of postgraduate training in economics and finance. Our MSc and Postgraduate Diploma programmes are available in both full time and part-time study mode. Most of our part-time students combine rigorous evening lectures with the demanding professional commitments.

Our postgraduate courses emphasise the analytical and quantitative skills that are particularly valued by employers. Core modules on analysis of economic and financial data using econometric techniques are a crucial aspect of our market reputation. Our range of options tracks market developments very closely: recent innovations include modules on Commodities and Commodity Derivatives, Risk Management, Behavioural Finance, and Banking and Regulation. Our teaching incorporates the extensive and active research portfolio of the faculty, but also draws on our external links with employers through consultancy experience. There are occasional guest lectures from practitioners.

Our teaching methods rely primarily on face-to-face lectures best suited to technical training. Active class-room study also enables students to interact closely with their peers, many of whom work in the City, for private sector consultancies and various Whitehall departments. Most of our students enjoy the friendly intellectual atmosphere in the department with easy access to lecturers and the research resources of the departments.

While the bulk of our students use their academic training to enhance their careers, some stay on a bit longer to carry out academic research leading to a PhD. We have a large and vibrant doctoral programme and the department is a part of an ESRC-funded Doctoral Training Centre.  Our research portfolio covers most areas of economics and finance but, notably, the department is home to two research centres: one in Applied Macroeconomics and the other in Commodities finance. We run active weekly research seminar series open to all, and our research is show-cased in a departmental working paper series.

The department is situated in the main College building in Bloomsbury, the heart of the University of London, and well connected to the public transport links of Central London. MSc students benefit from access to dedicated computer labs, specialist software, financial databases and trading simulation software. The onsite library provides access to books and journals in a modern user-friendly setting.
