Birkbeck, University of London
The course fills a critical gap in the market for postgraduate training in finance, financial engineering and financial risk management. If you have an undergraduate degree in another subject area - however distant - but wish to switch to postgraduate-level study in finance or related areas, this programme is specifically designed to allow you to do just that, without spending 3 or 4 years studying for a 2nd undergraduate degree. This programme provides you with knowledge of the core analytical tools of modern finance, coupled with some training in both numerical techniques and financial econometrics. It provides rigorous and intensive training, spread over 1 or 2 years, after which you will be able to compete on equal terms with students graduating with undergraduate degrees in finance or related disciplines. All students on the programme automatically receive a conditional offer of a place on one of our range of MSc programmes in finance: Finance , Financial Engineering and Financial Risk Management . Other students also go on to study at other top universities in the UK and overseas. The programme also provides free-standing training in finance, for those who require a quantitatively based knowledge of finance, and the associated analytical tools, in their working lives. Uniquely, this programme provides training specifically designed for postgraduate students.
At least a 2.2 degree in any discipline, or equivalent. Direct entry to the 1-year intensive programme usually requires at least a 2.1 and some prior mathematical training. Evidence of aptitude for mathematical and statistical analysis is advantageous. If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests.
You take the following 4 modules, plus preliminary classes in September. Modules include: Applied statistics and econometrics; financial markets; mathematical finance; quantitative techniques.
