Mathematics

This programme is designed to be as flexible as possible; you will have a choice of modules taken from our BSc Mathematics. You will meet with the programme director before the start of the academic year and decide on a suitable programme of study, based on your interests and experience.

Entry requirements

First degree in a quantitative discipline, such as science or economics, or a joint degree containing some mathematics. In exceptional circumstances, candidates without a first degree in a quantitative discipline may be admitted, provided they have equivalent-level qualifications or professional experience that convinces the admissions team that the programme is suitable for them. If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests.

Course modules

Graduate Diploma

Modules on the BSc Mathematics are at Level 4, 5 or 6. For the graduate diploma, you take 4 modules: one of your modules may be at Level 5 or 6, with the remaining 3 modules at Level 6.

All Level 5 modules run every year.

Level 6 modules differ each year. The following is an indicative list.
Level 5 modules:

Calculus 2: Multivariable & Differential Equations;
Discrete Mathematics;
Proof and Structure in Mathematics.

Level 6 modules available in 2016-2017:

Advanced Mathematical Methods;
Computational Mathematics;
Number Theory and Algebra;
Number Theory and Geometry;
Problems in Mathematics;
Real & Complex Variable.

Level 6 modules available in 2017-2018:

Advanced Mathematical Methods;
Algebra 2: Theory and Structure;
Calculus 3: Transforms & Models;
Games, Choice & Optimization;
Problems in Mathematics.

Graduate Certificate

Modules on the BSc Mathematics are at Level 4, 5 or 6. For the Graduate Certificate, you must take 2 modules at Level 6.

Assessment methods

Each module will have an examination at the end of the year. There will also be regular assessed coursework, usually contributing 20% of the marks for the module. Normally this will consist of 2-4 take-home exercise sets.
