Medical Leadership

This Master's degree, run by Birkbeck in association with the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), is designed specifically for doctors to help them to deal with the modern-day pressures and situations that they face as leaders in the medical world. Modules are delivered in purpose-built teaching facilities at the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) in London. The academic content is put into clinical context through medical case studies. Presentations about these case studies are given by expert speakers, including postgraduate deans, medical directors and hospital chief executives.

Entry requirements

The programme is aimed at fully qualified medical doctors practising within any specialty. A minimum of 1-2 years' higher specialist training is essential, for example, StR 3-4 in medical specialties. If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests.

You take the following modules and complete a dissertation. Year 1: Employee relations and motivation; employee relations and motivation (RCP); leading and developing people; leading and developing people (RCP); selection and assessment (RCP); understanding and changing organizations (RCP); understanding organizations and change; year 2: Applying medical leadership in practice (RCP); leadership and performance management (RCP); life career development (RCP); work and well being; work and well being (RCP); year 3: Dissertation MSc medical leadership

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on a combination of written coursework and group work.

Sponsorship information

The government's new postgraduate loan scheme allows you to borrow up to £10,000 to cover the cost of your tuition fees, living costs or other study expenses - and you don't have to start repaying until 2019. Some students currently on the programme receive financial support from their place of work, deanery or trust. Part-time students who are experiencing financial need may apply for assistance from the Birkbeck Alumni Fund Postgraduate Opportunity Bursary.
