Birmingham City University
Media and Cultural Studies
Researchers can study for an MPhil or a PhD in a broad range of subjects within the media, cultural studies and communication fields. Postgraduate research degrees are offered on a full-time or part-time basis, and we support both traditional research presented through an academic thesis, and research through practice degrees.
Applicants should normally have been awarded (or expect to be awarded) a Master's degree in a relevant subject area from a British or overseas university. Exceptional candidates without a Master's degree, but holding a 1st class Bachelors degree in media studies may be considered. Enquiries from potential students without formal academic qualifications but with appropriate levels of professional experience are welcome. Applicants for MPhil will normally be required to have a 1st or 2nd Class Honours degree. Those accepted for registration for MPhil may be allowed to apply for transfer to PhD registration at a later date subject to satisfactory research progress.
We encourage applications that are focused around the research specialisms of our team of supervisors and there are also some specific areas that we welcome proposals in: radio studies; digital cultures; music cultures; fandom; film studies; cultural policy; gender and sexuality; media for development; media for social change.
The nature of the student's research project is agreed by their supervisory team on the basis of the student's application but in all cases the production of a sustained piece of academic writing is a requirement of a research degree. In some cases (practice based research for example) a shorter dissertation may be appropriate as substantial practical work is presented to supplement the student's writing.
