Birmingham City University
Legal Practice Course (LPC)
This is the final academic stage of qualification before becoming a solicitor; the course bridges the gap between the academic study of law and the vocational stages of training; following successful completion of the LPC students need to undertake a 2 year vocational training contract to be able to practice as a solicitor.
Students require either a Qualifying Law Degree (eg a LLB from a University in England or Wales) or a Graduate Diploma in Law/Common Professional Examination. Fellows of the Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX) are entitled to apply for direct entry to the course. Before students can enrol on the Legal Practice course (LPC), they must enrol as a student member of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and obtain a certificate of completion of the academic stage of training.
The course is delivered in 2 stages: Stage 1: Professional conduct and regulation including solicitors' accounts; wills and administration of estates and taxation; litigation (including civil and criminal litigation); business law and practice; property law and practice; students are also assessed in the following course skills areas: practical legal research; drafting; writing; interviewing; advising; advocacy. Stage 2: In addition to the stage 1 modules, students are required to complete 3 option modules. the following is an indicative list of our option modules (although the modules offered will vary from year-to-year): personal injury and clinical negligence; commercial property; commercial law and practice; employment law; family law; private client; immigration law.
Assessment is by examination, coursework and presentation.
Bursaries may be available from employers or education funds.
