Forensic Psychology

This course offers students the chance to work with some of the most dangerous criminals in society, including sex offenders, offenders with mental disorders and victims of crime. The course offers an exciting opportunity for students to combine knowledge of psychological theory whilst developing the practical skills and an understanding of professional practice in forensic psychology. After this course many students either go in to employment with the prison services and enforcement agencies such as HMP Birmingham or they may choose to continue down a more academic route and focus on research.

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to hold a minimum of an upper 2nd Class Honours degree in psychology, with evidence of strong research methods skills. The degree must be accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), or be able to provide evidence of Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the BPS. Please see the BPS website for further details. Experience of working with offenders and/or victims of crime in either a paid or voluntary capacity is also desirable.

Course modules

Postgraduate Certificate stage: research methods in forensic psychology; the psychology of criminal behaviour; investigative psychology; victimology. Postgraduate Diploma: advanced research methods in forensic psychology; forensic and transferable skills; the psychology of law and justice; the assessment and treatment of offenders. Master's: dissertation project.

Assessment methods

The course includes a range of assessments, and students need to demonstrate an ability to carry out in-depth critical analysis, effective research skills, critically evaluate research methodologies, have an enhanced knowledge and understanding of theoretical and practical concern and be able to critically evaluate their findings in relation to the academic literature.
