The graduate diploma in psychology is aimed at graduates who have not studied accredited psychology and who would like to pursue a career as a professional psychologist; this is the 1st step in becoming a chartered psychologist which confers eligibility for (GBC) Graduate Membership for Chartership in Psychology, providing that a minimum of 50 percent has been attained and the empirical project has been successfully completed.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have a minimum 2.2 degree and either satisfactorily completed the Graduate Certificate in psychology or have at least 60 credits of appropriate psychology at degree level. At the point of enrolment applicants must have GCSE in English language and mathematics. All exemptions must be approved by the admissions tutor prior to starting the course. The British Psychological Society (BPS) requires all graduates to obtain a minimum of 50 per cent overall in order to meet the criteria for GBC. Proficiency in the English language is essential. If English is not the 1st language, applicants require an IELTS 6.5 minimum with a minimum score of 6 in all components, TOEFL (old examination) 630, TOEFL (new examination) 267 or equivalent.

Course modules

GradCert stage: exploring issues in cognitive and biological psychology; exploring issues in social and developmental psychology; origins and concepts in psychology; key skills and issues in psychological research methods. GradDip stage: fundamentals in developmental psychology; fundamentals in cognitive psychology; fundamentals in social psychology; psychological research and statistics; fundamentals in biological psychology; individual differences; psychology dissertation.

Assessment methods

Assessment for the Graduate Certificate is 100 per cent coursework, which is submitted and returned online; for the Graduate Diploma a variety of assessment methods are used throughout, including essays, multiple choice, practical reports, unseen exams and an empirical research project; students are required to achieve an overall pass mark of 50 per cent or above in order to obtain a diploma accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).
