Birmingham City University
A research degree is not a taught course but is an individual programme of research developed by the student and supported by at least 2 expert supervisors. A full-time PhD will normally take about 3.5 years, and can also be studied part time.
PhD applicants are normally expected to hold a Master's degree in a relevant area.Candidates need to complete the research degree application form and provide a statement of their initial research ideas (we advise between 1,000-2,000 words, with full referencing to relevant literature).
All students are required to undertake an initial training programme leading to a Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) in Research Practice during their 1st year of study, and other appropriate training in later years.
Written thesis (normally about 80,000 words). An oral examination with at least 2 specialist examiners is also required. All assessments are in English.
