Advanced Practice

The aim of the programme is to support nurses, midwives and allied health professionals in advancing practice at both clinical and strategic levels; the postgraduate diploma award can incorporate the NMC/HCPC (Nursing and Midwifery Council/Health and Care Professions Council) recordable prescriber qualification; it is designed for senior health professionals seeking a career which involves direct hands on clinical assessment and strategic service design and re-configuration; this course develops student's critical thinking and advanced physical assessment skills improving the effectiveness of care delivery and patient outcomes; in addition leadership skills are extended to enable greater involvement and influence of clinical and policy decisions; the MSc framework is designed to extend learner's knowledge and skills through integrating practical and theoretical knowledge; relating taught and evidence based materials/research to their practice setting; as a multi professional course it is suitable and relevant for all senior health professionals from varying clinical specialities.

Entry requirements

Be a registered practitioner, currently in practice; have 3 to 5 years professional experience in a speciality and a 1st degree or evidence of recent professionally related study at diploma or degree level; have studied research methods at level 6 (degree level) or physiology at level 5 (diploma level) or prescribing (level 6). Alternatively, candidates may need to complete some pre-course written work.

Course modules

There are 6 compulsory modules including: advanced health assessments and clinical decision making (double module); advanced practicum; population assessment for advanced practice; leadership for advanced practice; research, theory and practice: quantitative and qualitative or evidence based practice, plus some optional modules and research for a dissertation.

Assessment methods

These include essays, reports, practice documents, OSCEs and presentations. The advanced practice module will be assessed by a practice facilitator and monitored by the University. The prescribing module has several assessments required by the NMC including OSCEs and an examination.
