This course explores the issues which are determined and influenced by a range of social, economic and individual factors. Students are trained to negotiate and understand these factors, gaining the skills they need to develop career prospects in the public health sector Students learn how to prevent disease, prolong life and promote health in society. The course is aimed at students currently working in health administration or public health who want to progress onto more senior public health roles. The programme is relevant to anyone working or intending to work within the fields of public health, health promotion or community development. This may be within a wide range of settings such as local government, the health services, the NHS, planning or criminal justice or in a voluntary or community setting.

Entry requirements

An Honours degree (2.2 or above) in a subject associated with or of relevance to public health. Current or recent experience of working in a public health or health promotion role or capacity. (This may be as your main role or as an aspect of your role. It may also be in a paid or voluntary capacity and as a professional or non-professional). International students should additionally have an English language qualification (IELTS 6.5 or above).

Course modules

Year 1 modules: public health foundations: models approaches and practice (20 credits); global context of public health (10 credits); public health in a social context: people, places and policy (20 credits); leadership for health and social care (20 credits). Year 2 modules: public health from health protection to community development (20 credits); research methods and evaluation for public health (20 credits); epidemiology (10 credits). MSc research dissertation (60 credits).

Assessment methods

Modules are continually assessed by a variety of means including essays, reports, reflective diaries and presentations.
