Mental Health (incorporating Higher Specialist Social Work)
This course has been specifically designed to equip relevant professionals with the threshold skills necessary to engage in safe and effective AMHP practice and be considered for appointment by a local authority as an AMHP; to implement elements of the mental health legislation in conjunction with medical practitioners. This includes the preparation and assessment of specified capabilities to undertake duty and powers that allow appointed AMHPs to undertake the pivotal role in assessing and deciding whether there are grounds to detain mentally disordered people who meet the statutory criteria. The course is delivered in close collaboration with sponsoring agencies and involves practitioners and educators with significant experience of statutory mental health practice, by utilising a range of teaching and learning methodologies, including structured tutorial support to ensure full and effective engagement by the student.
Applicant must have at least 2 years post qualification experience as a Registered Mental Health/ Learning Disability Nurse, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist or Psychologist in mental health. They must have undertaken preparation for engaging with the AMHP training and provided full release and sponsorship by relevant employers eg Local Authority or Health Trust. Applicants need to have an enhanced up to date Disclosure and Barring Service clearance.
The role of the approved mental health professional; the legal and policy framework for mental health; evidence based mental health practice: includes an assessed placement of at least 40 days.
Formative and summative assessment for example presentations, assignments, law exam, assessment of practice, practice portfolio.
