Teaching and Learning (MTL)

The programme is designed to boost students' professional learning in their school, college or place of work. Students will already be making their mark in the working world, but eager to put the polish on their qualifications by studying for Master's degree. The really attractive aspect of this course is that it frees students up to gain a further qualification without giving up their job, because our tutors bring their expertise to students. This course is personalised and linked to students' workplace practices. Students enjoy the flexibility of choosing what areas they concentrate on when it comes to their development, research and study. As a work-based course, it will focus on students' day-to-day practice, whether they work in a school, academy, college or other educational setting, in whatever role.The MTL/MEL values and emphasises collaboration in the development of teachers and leaders in order to maximise their impact on children, young people or adult learners, their organisations and communities. The course supports continuing improvement and is rooted in a concept of partnership, which incorporates professional respect and promotes learning at all levels.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a degree or equivalent qualification, or professional experience that equates to degree level. In most cases, applicants will join the course as part of a workplace group and suitability to join the programme will be agreed between the university tutor and institutional leaders. Exemption from some modules may be granted for appropriate prior learning including credits gained on a PGCE course.

Course modules

Stage 1 PgCert: introductory modules (15 or 30 credits). Stage 2 PgDip: teaching and learning: teaching and learning, personalisation and assessment for learning (30 credits); subject knowledge and curriculum development (30 credits); learner development and inclusion (30 credits); leadership and management, working with others (30 credits). Stage 2 PgDip educational leadership: leadership and management, working with others (30 credits); professional development, coaching and mentoring (30 credits); institutional effectiveness, change and improvement (30 credits); partnership working and community involvement (30 credits). Stage 3 MTL/MEL: professional practice enquiry (60 credits).

Assessment methods

An audit of professional practice leading to an action plan at the start of each module assignment, which will also be used with tutors to monitor and evaluate progress. Assignments are designed to develop enquiry skills and critical reflection, through implementing actions, gathering workplace evidence and relating findings to relevant literature. Students are also expected to disseminate findings to colleagues in support of professional and organisational development, choosing an appropriate format and/or product.
