Bishop Grosseteste University
The course is aimed at those who intend to extend their professional development and understanding through research and reflection on practice; it is ideally suited to those who benefit from studying in a structured, collegiate environment consisting of 2 years of taught modules. These modules enable the development of research skills and the intellectual rigour demanded of professionals at doctoral level, they also provide the foundation for the subsequent period of study, the thesis stage, during which a thesis is written focused on an area of professional interest. The university offers a single entry system, ensuring that students move through the taught modules together, enabling the development of a strong community; this community facilitates peer review and reflection in a safe but challenging and stimulating intellectual environment; the cohort experience is further enriched by working closely with a small team of research active academics who guide and support students throughout all aspects of the programme.
The entry requirements are normally a 2.1 or 1st Bachelors Honours Degree, a Master's degree and at least 3 years' professional experience. At the point of application, you should be able to demonstrate that you have already identified a potential research project within a chosen discipline or field of enquiry.
The following modules will be covered before moving on to the thesis stage of the course: Developing as a researcher; engaging the research community; collaborative project; the field of inquiry; evaluative enquiry.
Each of the taught modules is assessed by means of a 5,000 word written assignment or equivalent. Tutor support is provided for each assessment component. Upon successful progression to the thesis stage, you will prepare a dissertation of not more than 55,000 words based on an area of professional focus. At the end of each year of this stage, you will make a presentation, reviewed by peers, in order to progress to the subsequent year. The final examination of the thesis, by the end of your period of registration, is through an oral examination or viva conducted by expert academics in the discipline or field of enquiry. Your thesis should make an original contribution to knowledge and be of publishable quality.
