Secondary Education (Physics with Mathematics, Initial Teacher Education)
The course is part of the programme for Initial Teacher Training; students are introduced to a range of teaching styles, classroom management skills, lesson planning and assessment procedures both in the university and through classroom support from teachers in schools; students consider strategies to support young people in their learning of science and the use of a range of teaching styles and resources, including the appropriate use of information and communications technology; students explore ways in which they can guide young people to develop an understanding of how scientists set about investigating the world, what science can answer and, probably more important in some ways, what it cannot; students help pupils to address misconceptions and could even uncover some of their own; students participate in sessions with other science graduates as well as in mixed subject groups where cross-curricular issues, such as learning theories and behaviour management are covered; 24 weeks are spent on placement: a total of 8 weeks in 1 placement during the autumn term and 16 weeks in a 2nd placement during the spring and summer; there is an opportunity to spend time in a primary school and some students may also visit other institutions, such as special schools or colleges of further education.
2.1 degree in the subject to be taught plus GCSE mathematics, science and English. A minimum of 1 day recent observation at a comprehensive school. Entry is subject to satisfactory interview to assess professional suitability and subject to successful medical and Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) clearance. Applicants must be provisionally registered with the General Teaching Council for England (GTCE).
