Public Health

This course will benefit those who are working, or intend to work, in the fields of public health, health promotion or health protection in developed or developing countries. It will also be very relevant to those who work within the National Health Service (NHS), local government, regeneration, criminal justice or the 3rd (voluntary and community) sector.

Entry requirements

Good degree in a relevant subject area as well as appropriate experience. Non-graduates complete a pre-course assignment and are considered individually.

Course modules

Core modules: understanding public health; epidemiology and research methodology; critical appraisal skills (formerly evidence-based public health); public policy; health promotion; communicable disease control; research project skills; dissertation. Plus optional modules: applied epidemiology; health economics; healthy and sustainable communities; regeneration, renewal and practice; social marketing; understanding statistics.

Assessment methods

Combination of essays, seminar presentations, project work and timed assignments.

The SHA (South West Strategic Health Authority, formerly known as WDC) may fund courses for employees of NHS Trusts and some independent organisations.
