Counselling Psychology

This course is designed to provide a doctoral level education and professional qualification; a doctoral level research project is combined with a taught programme of modules and with counselling psychology practice in a range of placements; research, theory, personal development, professional development and practice are integrated in the concept of the reflective practitioner; students are required to combine personal history with explicit use of psychological theory in analysing the process of therapy and as a basis for mindful practice; the part-time route allows a combining training with employment, possibly within a psychology post.

Entry requirements

Normally graduate basis for registration (GBR) with the British Psychological Society plus an upper 2nd Class or 2st Class degree and certificate in counselling skills.

Course modules

450 hours of counselling psychology practice on approved placements in addition to core modules: theory and practice in counselling psychology 1 and 2; personal and professional development 1, 2 and 3; research methods in counselling psychology; professional and ethical issues in counselling psychology; working with common presenting problems in counselling psychology; working with diversity in counselling psychology; working with mental health issues in counselling psychology; working with couples and families in counselling psychology; working with groups and organisations in counselling psychology; advanced independent development in counselling psychology.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include: coursework, direct observation, case studies, process reports, supervision groups and placement reports. The research portfolio includes a literature review, ethical and design proposal and a paper written in the format of a journal submission.
