Documentary Practice

This course is a modern and innovative postgraduate course that draws on a dense network of organisations and individuals working in documentary today. The course provides you with the space to creatively, practically and critically engage with the documentary from a variety of traditions, and is structured to provide you with training and professional expertise in dominant/mainstream documentary production techniques, procedures and alternative traditions.

Entry requirements

A UK 1st or 2nd class (2.1) honours degree or equivalent internationally recognised qualification in film, television, media or communications is required to study the Documentary Practice MA course. Other subjects and qualifications will be considered if they can demonstrate sufficient academic experience in areas relevant to the subject and are assessed on an individual basis. Entry criteria are subject to change. English language requirements: IELTS: 6.5 (min 6 in all areas); Pearson: 58 (51 in all subscores); BrunELT: 65% (min 60% in all areas).

Modules include: Theory and history of documentary practices; documentary practices 1; editing practices; alternative practices; documentary practices 2; short video project; final project.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by individual film projects, presentations and essays.
