Anthropology of Childhood, Youth and Education
This course, unique in its thorough-going anthropological perspective on what it is to be a child or to be young will cover organising principles. Such as: understanding children requires the study of how their relations with others - peers, older and younger children, parents, teachers and other adults - inform their practices, identities and world views.
An Honours degree from a UK institution, an equivalent overseas qualification, or an equivalent professional qualification (e.g. from a teaching or health or child welfare background or similar); candidates not fully meeting these criteria may nevertheless be considered; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 6.5 (with at least 6 in writing, listening, reading and speaking); TOEFL paper-based test 580 (with at least 4.5 in the test of written English); TOEFL internet-based test 92 (with at least 20 in reading, listening, speaking and writing); Pearson 58 (with at least 58 in all subscores); BrunELT 65 per cent (with at least 60 per cent in all areas).
Modules include: Dissertation in anthropology of childhood, youth and education; the anthropology of childhood; the anthropology of youth; ethnographic research methods; anthropology of education; anthropology of learning; reading modules: contemporary anthropological theory; political and economic issues in anthropology. Options include: The anthropology of the body; ethnicity, culture and identity; anthropology of the person; kinship, sex and gender; foundation disciplines of education; literature and policy analysis; international development, children and youth; global agendas on young people, rights and participation.
Assessment is variously by essay, practical assignments (e.g. analysis of a short field exercise), and a dissertation of approximately 15000 words.
