Modelling and Management of Risk
This programme pursues theoretical and applied research issues, encompassing the growing use of risk and optimisation in diverse sectors; students gain specific skills in the areas of: problem structuring; data analysis; building decision models; risk assessment in the corporate, financial, public and environment sectors; decision making under uncertainty; business simulation; project evaluation; resource management; recognising the areas where business analysis can add value; selecting appropriate types of analyses and applying them in an appropriate context.
A UK 1st or 2nd Class Honours degree or equivalent internationally recognised qualification in maths; other related disciplines with a significant quantitative component (calculus and algebra) may be considered on an individual basis; other qualifications with relevant work experience may be considered and applicants may be required to attend an interview; basic computer skills are also expected and basic skills in programming would be an advantage; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 6 (with a minimum of 5.5 in all areas); TOEFL paper-based test 550 (with a minimum of 4 in the test of written English); TOEFL internet-based test 79 (with a minimum of 18 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing); Pearson 51 (with a minimum of 51 in all areas); or BruneELT 60 per cent (with a minimum of 55 per cent in all areas).
Core modules include: risk and risk regulations; applied risk and optimisation in financial planning; financial markets; risk measures, preference and portfolio choice; risk, simulation and decision analysis; dissertation.
Assessment is by a combination of coursework, examinations and the dissertation.
